I've always had a fascination with locks, keys, letterboxes, door knobs and door knockers - the best places to find them all at once being doors themselves. From the most ornate, grandiose entries to the simple, functional ones painted a cheery colour - I can't stop myself seeking them out whenever I'm wandering down a street. There's a line of course; PVC are not my cup of tea visually speaking, but they're not without their own stories. It's nigh on impossible for me to spot an interesting something about a door and not want to take a picture or fabricate a history of it's character or the people who use it each day; is it obstinate and only persuaded to budge if you lean your full weight against it and jiggle while you turn the key? Who lives or works inside?
Before I sound too much like a burglar casing the joint and planning a break-in I'll tell you my theory: that doors are like books, there is a world behind each one - only as people come and go the story evolves, more fluid than finite ink on a page.
it would be great to be able to see the world the way you do! doors are SO much like books, never thought of them that way before. lush pictures as usual!

I know exactly what you mean!that's why I have a keyhole as part of my logo. It's curious to imagine what on goes behind those beauties..especially love that blue door;so grand :)xx
ReplyDeleteI love doors too! When Steve and I were in Malta, I spent most of one day taking photos of the most amazing doors. There's a street in Liverpool that has doors tucked neatly between shops, and Steve and I love to sit in a coffee shop opposite and see if anyone goes through the secret doors. When I was a child, TThe Secret Garden" was one of my favourite books because of the door hidden in the ivy and the enormous key that unlocked it. Now when I see beautiful doors, I have the same thoughts and feelings as I had when I was a child and read about the secret door to the garden. What goes on inside? What stories are being made right now behind that door? I totally relate to your feelings around doors being like book covers. I have that same feeling too! Thank you for sharing Jem, I always really look forward to your favourite things each week. Em x
ReplyDeleteYou're not alone in your appreciation of doors! I once produced a textile design using various doors as the pattern!
ReplyDeleteBit funny when someone opens the door you're photographing though! :D xx
I love it when you come across a row of houses each with an original, unique door. This can make a long, seemingly boring walk all the more bearable.
ReplyDeleteFor me though, its windows and the internal sill I can't get enough of. I get to see right into a lot of houses round my way, there's no front garden or porch, just straight from pavement to lounge. I can even smell their dinner!
Enjoyed enormously the clever the way this post was written.
Have a lovely weekend,

Lovley collection. The blue one is a gorgeous deep colour.

Doors can be beautiful, I agree :) xo
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your writing style. I hadn't really thought about doors like that before but I like the idea of a story behind each one.
ReplyDeleteI share your love of doors! I can spend hours searching eBay for architectural ironmongery.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures, which one's yours? x
I love doors too and have taken numerous photos of them. I especially like big heavy, wide Georgian ones with lovely old brass door furniture.

ReplyDeleteI love beautiful doors too and those pictures of yours are showing an outstanding collection!
ReplyDeleteMe too! in fact, most of my holiday snaps are of doors. Dublin and Prague have the best ones!
ReplyDeleteDo I sense a book in the making? I would love to hear one of your imagined stories about a particular door. I feel like the pale green one behind the bush would have a lot to say over a cup of earl grey tea. And we really should appreciate them more like you do, ours gets slammed open and closed all the time in our rush without me stopping to think about the fact that it is the gateway between home and the rest of the world, mmm.... you've got me thinking.... in the future I'd like to do a post for my front door!!
ReplyDeleteGreat analogy between doors and books ! Wonderfully - written post ! It was a pleasure visiting you !

Great post, I too love doors and have been very distressed for the last 5 years that I've had to live with the hideous uPVC monstrosity that is my current front door. I was going to mention Malta too but see I've been beaten too it - took loads of photos of them when I was there in May. Very much like your door/book theory xx
ReplyDeleteMe too, love doors, eps. victorian ones!

I love the green no.3 door.
ReplyDeleteDoors always fascinate me, you always wonder what is behind them and judge it by what the door looks like.
Great post. Lolo xx
