One of my favourite purchases this year has been Style Me Vintage: Clothes by Naomi Thompson, I have loved flicking through it on a gloomier day to cheer myself while sipping a cup of tea. The photography is beautiful and the tips on sourcing, dating and what to avoid when hunting for vintage clothes are so helpfully written. The highlight for me though, is the breakdown of each sartorial decade from the 1920s to the 1980s - the key shapes and silhouettes, the way the fashion of the decade was shaped by its popular culture and hints for putting together an authentic look. There are even some familiar faces inside like the beautiful Fleur De Guerre from Diary of a Vintage Girl. Besides which, it is such a pretty book in itself that it looks lovely on my coffee table!
I have one fabulous copy (complete with that brilliant new-book smell) to give away to a lucky reader of Beautiful Clutter. A not-so-Christmassy Christmas giveaway you could say! To be in with a chance of winning this gorgeous tome you must be a follower of my blog via GFC or Bloglovin' and leave a comment below telling me which decade is your favourite when it comes to vintage fashion inspiration, make sure to leave an email address so that I can get in touch if you win! You can also tweet about the giveaway for an extra entry, just leave a separate comment telling me that you have. I'll pick a winner at random one week from today, so Monday 10th December, best of luck clutterbugs!
I love the fashions of the 40s. They may not be the most glamorous, but because of shortages, women had to "make do and mend" with wonderfully inventive results! I would love to win this book.

The 80s is my fashion decade of choice. Only joking, the 20s. Flapper dresses are fabulous! My email is nykie @ another.com if I win (fingers crossed!)
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win this!!
ReplyDeleteLove this! My favourite fashion would be from the twenties- I love the flapper style dresses, the headpieces and the general fashion from then :)

What a lovely giveaway Jem! I would pick the 40s I think, I've always been fascinated with war time fashion, there's something glam about it even though people were making do and mending at every corner..

My favourite has to be the 50s - circle skirts and sweet pastel prints have me dreaming of a picnic in the countryside on a hazy summer's afternoon, home-made lemonade and a portable record player in hand! This book looks amazing!! darlingandlovely@yahoo.com (I follow you on bloglovin just with a different e-mail just incase that matters..)
ReplyDeleteI love the 20s and the 40s. I watched war time farm and was left wanting to wear victory rolls in my hair :)
ReplyDeleteLovely giveaway missy :) I follow you on bloglovin :)

I love everything vintage but it was the 1930's in particular which got me into collecting. I use to, and still do spend hours watching films from that decade - Gone with the Wind and all the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films - i'd of love to have been around seeing those films for the first time and see what Detroit was like back then - it was one of the best and largest era for the city!

You were right, I love this giveaway! Such a beautiful cover, I can imagine it's one of those you forever find yourself referring back to again and again. There is nothing far more glorious than vintage clothing and dreaming about pieces from time gone by. My favourite era is forever the 60’s, I love the hippy movement and darling Twiggy xxx

It is always the 1920's, the heavy beading, it was the era that women really came into their own following their wartime emancipation and it showed! There's nothing better than the Charleston and prohibition liqueur from teacups! An era I love so much that I had a Gatsby themed 21st birthday in a bell tent :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic giveaway

Just has to be the 50s. The polka dots, the glamour, the hour glass figures, swishy skirts and under skirts and not to mention the animal print :)

I love the 20's, all the glamorous flapper dresses, headdresses, sequins and embellishments, so beautiful!

I love the 40s - the victory roll, the seamed tights, red lips and tea dresses are just devine. Last year there was a night in Bristol called Blitzmas and it was so much fun - jazz, swing music and 40s makeovers - fingers crossed there'll be another event like it this year! x
ReplyDeleteA lot of decades have some amazing things! But overall I think the 50s, the clothes were perfect, but the interior design was amazing as well<3

I'm following you on GFC and my favorite decade for clothes is from 1900-1910, the oughts (sp?)!
ReplyDeleteelsbethvonthurn@gmail.com
It' the 20s and 30s for me -I reckon I was born 60 years too late!
ReplyDeleteHi Jem, please don't put my name down for the book (even though it's a lovely one. I borrowed it from the library so I can vouch for it) it would cost far too much money to send it here to Aus.
ReplyDeleteI can find something to love about most eras - fashion and interior wise. Right now though, I am loving the 70's.
I hope you are well and happy, happy, HAPPY!

ReplyDeleteI love the 1970's, "my" era. We had so much fun dressing then (probably looked quite hideous) but nobody took themselves seriously, it was fashion pushed to the extremes. It truly was an anything goes era, one day you could be glamorous in Ossie Clarke crepe or a little Biba number, then you'd be in loon pants or pedal pushers with diamante brooches on the turn-ups, brooches in the shape of lollipops or ice cream cones, towering platform shoes. Fantastic! denisemartin1953@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteI would choose 50s fashion, I love the billowing skirts and they had such tiny waists!! Every photograph from the 1950s looks so elegant and glamorous (especially ones from my gran's photo album!) xx
ReplyDeleteFavourite era has to be either the 40's (I love the hairstyles, red lipstick and most of all the dresses), or the 80's!! (can't get enough of those florescent clothes lol).
ReplyDeleteoh and my email is bethrichardson04@hotmail.co.uk
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blog and gorgeous giveaway! It would have to be the 40s: tea dresses, red lipstick and victory rolls, what's not to love! sophie-welch@hotmail.co.uk (I follow on bloglovin)
ReplyDeleteI'm so bad at knowing what fashion trends come from what era... But having said that, I love these pictures I have of my Mum when she was little in her tiny shorts and knee socks wearing a t-shirt with frilly sleeves - you know, all Swallows and Amazons - so I guess that would be from the 50's! Yes, I'm going to go with 50s'.
ReplyDeleteOoh what a fabulous giveaway. I have followed you on Bloglovin. THough, not really sure why I haven't already?!!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite era has to be the 1920's. The ladies looked beautiful with their boyish figure, stunning little flapper dresses. Feathers, fringe, short hair cuts, ohh the Charleston.
Sigh... the 'noughties' is such a boring era!!!

ReplyDeleteOhhh this is right up my street. I go through phases with eras... this summer I was loving the 70s, but now it's winter again I think I'm solidly back on 40s - looks like that's the most popular choice too! What a lovely giveaway Jem! xxx

Hi Jem!! I envy your butterflies! We have a taxidermist place in Perth but everything inside was found dead or died the way nature intended, not killed by humans so I have enjoyed visiting there:) Hope you are having a splendid December:)
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite decade to style is a mix between the 50's and the 70's. I love the sweet elegance of the 50's but I'm so wild at heart so I also love the 70's for it's color and imagination
